“To rectify one’s inner self one needs to hold fast to dawam-e-ta’at. Dawam-e-ta’at means to continually obey Allah in all situations, regardless of whether or not the nafs wishes to.
This is what mujahadah is; to strive to and combat the nafs when it does not wish to obey the command of Allah. This resistance from the nafs maybe in the form of committing a sin, or it may be in the form of leaving an act of worship. In either case one must combat his nafs and do as he needs to.
If one does not adopt this method then it will not be possible for him to rectify himself.”

Basically what is being said and meant by this is that, to rectify yourself (your inner desires, your ability to obey Allah and follow his commandments and resisting the temptation of evil) one should hold on to Dawam-e-ta’at. Dawam-e-ta’at means to obey Allah in all situations. So you may have the opportunity to sin and have the ability to do so and nobody would find out but you stop yourself, e.g a person may have the ability to look at something haraam but they may get the thought that "No this action is haraam and even though nobody can see me if I commit this act Allah can." Even though your inner desires (nafs) will be encouraging you to sin and the whispers of shaytaan will be giving you the ideas to sin, you refuse to do so simply because you know that Allah is watching you and by committing the sin you will cause displeasure to Allah. This act of leaving haraam and going against the whims and requests of the nafs is what a mujahidah (meaning one who struggles) is, as he struggles against his nafs and obeys the commandments of Allah no matter what. If one does not do the above (stopping himself from committing sins) then it will not be possible for him to rectify himself because he has no control over his desires and therefore falls into sin and this can cause a muslim to move further away from Allah.
